Theatre 草榴社区 will present the romantic comedy鈥The Rainmaker鈥in the Studio Theatre of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of 草榴社区 TexasCommunity College. The show will run October 25-27 at 7:30 and October 28 at 2:05 p.m.
Originally written in 1953 as a one-act television production,鈥The Rainmaker鈥爓as adapted into a three act play and appeared on Broadway with Geraldine Page and Darren McGavin in the roles of Lizzie Curry and Starbuck. The play was later made into a film starring Katherine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster.
The Rainmaker鈥爄s a wonderful story about family, survival, faith, beauty and hope.鈥犫燭he play revolves around the character of Lizzie, whose father and brothers have tried every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Set against the backdrop of the paralyzing drought which ravaged the mid-west during the dust bowl days, the parched earth becomes symbolic of Lizzie?s parched heart.鈥犫燱ill the dreaded drought ever end! When suddenly from out of nowhere appears a picturesque character with a mellifluous tongue and the most grandiose notions a man can imagine. He is a rainmaker, and he promises to bring rain. Some call him a liar and a con man?some believe in his wistful ways?and one, Lizzie, learns the essence of beauty and the magic of dreams.
Brittany Derby and Nick Derby (Waskom) play the roles of Lizzie and Starbuck. Cory Myers (Mt. Pleasant) plays the father, H.C.Curry.John Chambers (MT. Pleasant) is Jim, the youngest brother; Eric Staples (Daingerfield) and Dylan Schlosser (Mt. Pleasant) play the older brother Noah. Tyler Beadle (Mt. Pleasant) portrays File, the Deputy Sheriff and Sean Casebolt (Mt. Vernon) plays the Sheriff. The production stage manager is Katie Barrett (Mt. Pleasant) and the Assistant Director is Stormy Mack (Winnsboro). The production is directed by NTCC Professor of Theatre, Douglas Hoppock.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for age 17 and under, $3 for NTCC Faculty, Staff and Sr. Citizens. NTCC students are free with a current ID.鈥犫燚ue to the limited number of seats in the Studio Theatre, reservations are requested by calling the Whatley Box Office at 903-434-8181.
